About NAPSLO & the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation
Incorporated in 1975, the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines is the authoritative voice representing the surplus lines industry and the wholesale insurance distribution system. It is an association of insurance brokers, agents and underwriters who are committed to the wholesale value distribution system and the surplus lines industry, and provides networking opportunities, education and career development programs, and regulatory and legislative advocacy on behalf of its members.
The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation was formed in 1991 and is dedicated to encouraging the educational development of all those interested in the excess and surplus lines business, to creating and understanding and overcoming the misperceptions of the excess and surplus lines market.
Learning More about the Industry
NAPSLO and the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Foundation pursue a number of educational programs to drive awareness of the industry and the opportunities it presents for students. Whether through more formal, high-impact engagements like some or the regional symposiums we participate in, or through individual campus visits, there are a number of ways for you to learn more about the surplus lines industry.
Extreme Risk Takers Symposium — Chicago, IL — Spring
The Alpha Kappa Chapter at the Katie School of Insurance at Illinois State University hosts an annual Extreme Risk Takers Symposium. The annual symposium is an educational program sponsored by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation on the surplus lines insurance market and offers sessions and networking opportunities with peers and industry professionals. The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium — Atlanta, GA — Fall
The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium is presented by Troy University’s Sorrell College of Business each fall and students from several universities attend the event.
The annual symposium features a career fair, reception/dinner, and educational sessions with various presenters from the surplus lines industry, and receives sponsorship from the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Foundation.
Attendees hear from surplus lines industry representatives and the selection of speakers ensures that a variety of points of view are presented for a thorough discuss of the excess & surplus lines insurance industry. The symposium features a career fair and networking opportunities to allow students to begin building relationships to aid their transition to the professional world.
