How to Find a Career You’re Actually Excited About

Finding a job you love isn’t always about following a perfect formula. It’s about learning what excites you, where your talents lie, and how to connect the two. With more tools than ever to explore career options, now’s the perfect time to take a closer look at what drives you and how it might shape your future.

Step 1 – Start With What You Love

Grab a notebook or open your Notes app and start listing things you genuinely enjoy — sports, gaming, fixing cars, writing, animals, photography, organizing, travel, or whatever comes to mind. Don’t worry about whether it sounds “professional” or if you can picture a clear career from it right away.

If you're stuck, ask friends or family what they think you’re great at, sometimes people around us spot patterns we don’t see ourselves.

Step 2 – Look for Patterns, Not Job Titles

Once you have your list, look for themes or common threads. Do you like helping people? Solving puzzles? Being outdoors? Working solo or in a team? These patterns often point to roles that match your work style and personality, even if they’re in fields you’ve never considered.

Don’t be discouraged if your hobbies don’t feel “career-worthy.” Not every passion becomes your full-time job, but it can still influence your path in surprising ways.

Step 3 – Do a Social Deep Dive

Today's job seekers are turning to platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and Instagram to learn about different careers. You can follow creators who document a day in the life of their jobs, give tips on getting started in their field, or share insights about what they love (or hate) about their work.

Some ideas to try:

  • TikTok & YouTube: Search for “day in the life of a [job title]” to get real-life views of what different jobs are like.
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/findapath, r/careerguidance, or r/jobs are full of honest advice from people across industries.
  • LinkedIn: Great for finding and messaging professionals in your area of interest, especially for informational interviews.
  • Instagram & Threads: Follow hashtags like #PublicAdjusterLife or #DigitalNomadCareer to discover niche professions and communities.

The way we network and explore careers has evolved. These digital spaces are full of inspiration and insight if you’re curious and respectful when reaching out.

Step 4 – See Where Hobbies Meet Careers

One of the coolest things about risk management and insurance careers? They often intersect with hobbies in unexpected ways.

For example:

  • If you’re into boats or RVs, there are claims adjusters who specialize in inspecting and valuing them.
  • Love motorcycles? There's insurance for that, and people who assess damage and help riders get back on the road.
  • Into scuba diving? Some adjusters need dive certifications to assess damage to underwater structures.
  • Skilled in home improvement or construction? That knowledge is incredibly useful in property claims.

There’s a whole world of careers where your personal interests don’t just come along for the ride—they give you a competitive edge.

Final Thought:

You don’t need to figure out your entire life path in one go. Start with what excites you, explore with curiosity, and stay open to unexpected intersections between what you love and how you work. A job that feels like you is out there, and the more you explore, the closer you'll get.
