Job Description

Customer service professionals are often the first contact between an insurance company, agency, or brokerage and its customer, making them the true voice of the company. They answer questions, collect information needed to create an insurance policy, and get the ball rolling when a customer needs to file a claim. They are often the compassionate listener helping a client navigate a difficult time. They may work part time or full time, in offices or call centers. Many also work remotely from their homes. 

Whether guiding a potential new customer to a sales agent or helping a longtime customer who has suffered a loss, customer service professionals help build and maintain relationships. People in this role display patience and are driven to solve problems for their customers. Bilingual skills are especially valuable in this role.

Customer service is an ideal place to begin learning the insurance and risk management business. Often, customer service jobs provide good on-the-job education in sales, claims, and other areas, allowing customer service representatives the opportunity to expand their careers.

Additional Education

Some companies or states may require customer service reps to obtain a license and/or designation depending on their role. In those cases, companies typically provide training and preparation for any required exam. Ultimately, customer service reps may want to explore earning an Accredited Customer Service Representative™ (ACSR) designation.
